When asked about Baccarat a lot of people today instantly think about the American Baccarat which is played in North American, but there are lot more variations of the game which you can find in other countries around the world. They have a lot of different names and rules but the main object of the game stays the same, getting your hand as close to 9 points. Here are some of the more popular ones.
Chemin de Fer
This variant of Baccarat can be found in a lot of European casinos (most of them French). The main object of the game is the same, getting a winning hand as close to 9 as possible. The main part where this game differs from normal Baccarat is that the casino does not take over the role of the banker. In Chemin de Fer you can’t just bet on Player or Bank, you have to be either one or the other. The players have to wager among themselves while they take turns playing as the bank. Being the banker can be declined and it will pass to the next player to his right.
They only thing that the casino will offer is a Croupier that will make sure the rules are followed and that the game goes as smoothly as possible. For this service the casino will take a rake of around 5% from all winning Bank hands.
When compared to American Baccarat this variation has two very important differences:
- The player can either stand or draw on 5.
- The banker which is controlled by the dealer has the option to draw a third card.
The casino will finance the banker’s hand. For example if the Banker funds $1,500 and the first player bets $1000 and the second player bets $500, the next players can’t bet any more for now. If a player wants to cover the entire banker’s bet he has to call out “banco” and no other players will have the option of betting in that round. Players who will decide to bet with the bank will be charged the same 4 or 5 percent out of their winnings like in other versions of Baccarat.
Baccarat en Banque
In this variant of Baccarat the house will always play the role of the banker with the help of a casino employee. In other versions of Baccarat the player with the most money will usually be declared the banker. Given that the Banker is controlled by the casino, bets can be much larger than when another player is being the bank. The game can also be played with as little as one player, compared to the minimum of two in other variations. Here are some other basic rules:
- Three hands will be generally dealt, one for the bank and two for the players.
- The players can bet on one or both of the player’s hands but they never get to bet on the dealer’s hand.
- No exact drawing rules exist, they are generally optional. In some cases the dealer might follow the American Baccarat rules while other times he will change them up to enhance his chances of winning.
