Poker terms you need to know

Poker terms you need to knowYou have probably had this experience when watching professional Poker or sitting around a table with players who know what they’re doing. All of them are talking with certain terms which you just can’t grasp and which sometimes can be very confusing. Here are some of the more popular terms you should know before hitting the tables:

  • Ante:This is a small bet which all players have to pay before a hand is dealt. This is pretty similar to a blind but everyone has to pay it before a hand starts. Antes will give the pot some value right at the start of the game.
  • All-in:A bet through which a player puts all of his chips into a pot.
  • Backdoor:When you hit the cards that you need on the turn or the river. For example if you have two hearts in your hand and there is one on the board after the flop, if two more hearts show up on the turn and river you are the lucky recipient of a “backdoor” flush.
  • Bad Beat: If a player who initially had a statistical lead over his opponent loses his hand after his opponent gets just the right cards on the flop, turn or river.
  • Bubble: In the case of a tournament, the bubble is the top finisher who gets no money. For example in a tournament with 450 players in which only the top 45 get paid, the 46th place is called “the bubble”.
  • Connector: Pocket cards in a sequence. A 5 of clubs and a 6 of hearts are connectors. If these connectors are also of the same suit, they will be called “suited connectors”.
  • Counterfeit:This is what you call a duplicate card on the board that greatly devalues your hand. Let’s say that you have a pair of 6’s and the board is ace-ace-7-4. If the river card turns out to be a 7, you’ve just been “counterfeited”. You had two pairs, but now the board has two better pairs which means that any players with a higher card than 6 in their hands will now beat you.
  • Drawing Dead: You’re still drawing but your case is doomed to lose because there is not one card left in the deck that will allow you to win this hand.
  • Gutshot: A straight which can only be completed by one possible card. If for example you’re holding a 5 and a 6 and the flop shows 4-8-king, only a 7 on the turn or river would complete your “gutshot” straight.
  • Limp: A slang term for calling, but generally just to stay in the game, not as an aggressive move.
  • Nuts:This is the best possible hand that you could have at a given moment.
  • Pot-committed: This is usually a situation in which you have to call due to the amount of money you’ve already put inside the pot compared to your remaining stack of chips. In these situations, folding is a bad decision.
